Search is changing: alongside the classic list of links, AI-powered answers now summarise results and cite a handful of sources. Generative Engine Optimisation, or GEO, is the practice of making your content one of the sources those answers cite. It builds on traditional SEO rather than replacing it — the fundamentals still matter — but it adds emphasis on clarity, structure and trustworthiness that AI systems can actually use.
How AI answers choose sources
AI answer engines look for pages that answer a question directly, completely and credibly. They favour content with clear headings, concise definitions, structured facts and evidence of expertise, and they prefer sources that are consistent with what other trustworthy sources say. A page that buries its answer under long introductions, or that contradicts itself across pages, is harder for an AI system to cite confidently — and therefore less likely to be cited at all.
Write answers AI can quote
Put the direct answer near the top of the page, in plain language, before the detail. Follow it with structured supporting content: short paragraphs, lists, tables where comparison helps, and FAQ sections for follow-up questions. Include specific, verifiable facts — service areas, process steps, real criteria — rather than vague claims. Content written this way serves human readers too, which is why GEO and good content strategy overlap so heavily.
Structure and schema help machines understand
Structured data — FAQ, Service, LocalBusiness, Article schema — helps AI systems understand what a page is about and which facts belong to it. Consistent business information across your site, your profiles and directories also matters: AI systems cross-check, and conflicting addresses, phone numbers or service descriptions reduce confidence. Keep your core facts identical everywhere, and update them in one place when they change.
Measure citations, not just rankings
GEO measurement is still maturing, but practical checks exist: search AI answers for your key questions and note whether your brand appears, track branded search growth, and monitor traffic from AI-referred sources where analytics can identify it. Treat GEO as a long-term investment in clarity and authority, not a trick: the pages that get cited are usually the pages that were already the most useful, now structured so machines can recognise that usefulness.
