SEO for WooCommerce Product Pages: Rank Products, Not Just the Shop

Many WooCommerce stores optimise their homepage and categories, then leave product pages to default settings — and wonder why product searches bring competitors instead. Product pages are where buying intent is highest, and they deserve individual attention. The good news is that product SEO is mostly a repeatable checklist, applied consistently across the catalogue.

Unique descriptions, not supplier text

Supplier descriptions duplicated across dozens of stores give search engines no reason to rank yours. Rewrite the key products with original descriptions that answer buyer questions: what it is, what it is for, specifications that matter, compatibility, and what is included. Prioritise best-sellers and high-margin products first; a catalogue of hundreds can be improved in batches rather than all at once. Keep titles descriptive and specific, including the attributes buyers actually search for.

Product schema and rich results

Product schema with name, image, price, availability and review data makes products eligible for rich results, including price and stock information in search. Keep the marked-up price and availability accurate and in sync with the page — mismatches erode trust and can cause warnings. For products with variants, mark up the variant structure sensibly rather than duplicating the same product many times with thin differences.

Images, reviews and variants

Optimise product images with descriptive file names and alt text, modern formats and sensible sizes, since images drive both search visibility and conversion. Genuine customer reviews add unique content and trust; display them on the product page and collect them after purchase. Handle variants carefully: use canonical URLs and clear variant selection so search engines index the main product rather than dozens of near-duplicate variant pages.

Links, speed and stock honesty

Link related products and relevant guides from each product page, and link best-sellers from category pages and the homepage, so authority flows to the pages that convert. Keep product pages fast — images and scripts are the usual culprits — and handle out-of-stock products honestly: keep the page with alternatives and a restock note, rather than deleting a URL that has earned rankings and links. Product SEO compounds: each improved page lifts the store, and the store lifts each page.
